With the new school year, there will be a new place to eat at Wichita State University.
Wisconsin-based Erbert & Gerbert’s Sandwich Shop is opening Aug. 24 on the first floor of the Rhatigan Student Center, which is home to other restaurants such as Chick-fil-A and Pizza Hut.
This will be the chain’s first foray into Kansas.
“I’m so jealous,” says Samantha Amato, who is with the Chicago-based firm promoting the chain. “It’s really good.”
The name of the restaurant comes from a couple of characters in stories that the father of the restaurant’s founder used to tell his 10 children.
“Erbert and Gerbert would travel throughout space and time … and they would always meet a new friend,” says Kim Middleton, who is in sales for the chain but calls herself “a cheerleader for this brand.”
Each of Erbert & Gerbert’s sandwiches has its own name – such as Comet Candy, Spartan and Quatro – and back story.
Middleton says the chain is interested in expanding in Kansas and possibly adding more restaurants as well.
There are 81 Erbert & Gerbert’s restaurants nationally.
Amato says she hopes Chicago is on the expansion list as well.
“I literally wake up some nights needing a Quatro.”
