Sports Authority at NewMarket Square is going to close.
“It’s true,” says April Reed, a broker with Slawson Cos., developer of the center at 21st and Maize Road.
“They’re not renewing their lease,” she says.
The store’s last day in business is July 1.
“I was surprised that we were closing,” says store manager Nate Lund.
He says it’s a marketing decision.
“It’s not cost effective for them to continue these smaller two-store markets.”
There’s a Sports Authority on the east side at 6959 E. 21st St.
“For now, it’s open,” Lund says. “I don’t know going forward. That’s kind of up in the air.”
A manager at the east-side store declined to comment.
Lund says Sports Authority has left a lot of markets where it had just one store.
“But they’re adding stores in our bigger markets,” he says. “It’s just a lot more cost effective for them from a marketing standpoint.”
Reed said there’s interest in the 32,630-square-foot NewMarket Square space from other potential tenants.
“We have one proposal … and several other interested prospects,” she says. “It’s a great space.”
Lund says he’s not sure when closing sales will start.
Look for more information – on the closing and on a potential new tenant – as it becomes available.
