Hillside Funeral Home is named for its original mortuary at 935 N. Hillside, but it is now operating only out of its location at 2929 W. 13th St.
The property on North Hillside is for sale.
“We had a big decision to make,” says manager Jayde Murray. “The building had a lot of upkeep that needed to be done.”
If there had been renovations, that would have necessitated also making the building ADA compliant.
Never miss a local story.
“It would have been a very costly investment for us,” Murray says.
She says she thinks customers probably questioned if the facility was what it should be.
“Our west office offers a lot more to families,” Murray says. “Our west location is just much more functional.”
Location was another reason for the consolidation.
“Honestly, the area is just not what it used to be, unfortunately,” Murray says.
She says a stipulation with the building’s sale is that it can’t be sold to another funeral home.
“Why would we want to have a competitor in there?”
The property is on 1.27 acres and has two buildings. There’s an 11,300-square-foot one in the front where funerals used to be held and a 7,200-square-foot warehouse in the back. There are 72 parking spaces.
The property is listed for $450,000. Grant Tidemann of J.P. Weigand & Sons is representing the funeral home.
Ideally, Murray says Hillside would like to sell to a church.
“That would be awesome.”
