Spirit AeroSystems has begun assembly of parts of a fifth Sikorsky CH53K heavy-lift helicopter test demonstrator for the Marines.
The Wichita-based aircraft supplier announced Monday at the opening of the Paris Air Show that final assembly of the System Demonstration Test Article is set to begin in September.
Spirit is responsible for the assembly of the CH53K’s entire composite cockpit and cabin and delivering a complete fuselage to Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company.
Earlier this year Sikorsky said it had reached a milestone on the CH53K program that triggers low-rate initial production of the King Stallion helicopter for the Marines. The Defense Department is calling for 200 of the helicopters.
