Bombardier Learjet took a step closer Tuesday to spending more than $50 million to expand and modernize its plant in west Wichita.

At Bombardier’s request, the City Council unanimously approved issuing a letter of intent for up to $52.7 million in industrial revenue bonds. The bond revenue will cover construction and renovation of buildings near Kellogg and Tyler, along with purchasing equipment and machinery.

The project is expected to produce 450 new jobs through 2018, according to city documents.

The bond issue would carry no liability for the city.
