Cessna announces voluntary retirement program to reduce costs

Cessna Aircraft is offering employees a voluntary retirement program as it works to keep costs down.

The offer is for Cessna employees who are at least 55 years old and not associated with the production of aircraft, said spokeswoman Stephanie Harder.

Hourly employees represented by the Machinists are not affected.

“Our production levels are not being changed,” Harder said. “We still have openings listed.”

Employees volunteering for the program would work until May 3.

The company does not have a target number for the voluntary retirements.

“It’s not about numbers,” Harder said. “It’s about reducing the current indirect costs overall.”

Cessna employs 8,200 people, including 5,800 in Wichita.

Employees have until April 12 to apply for the program.

“Cessna continually evaluates our operations so we can be effective in meeting the needs of our customers and in achieving our business objectives,” the company said in a statement. “We are taking action to streamline our business to continue to improve our cost competitiveness. Recent announcements and corresponding product updates point to the fact that we are maintaining our focus on investments that position Cessna positively for the future.”

Cessna’s parent company, Textron, will release first-quarter results of the company’s performance on April 17.
