K&O parent’s railcar repair joint venture begins operations

Watco and an Oregon firm said Monday that their joint venture creating a network of railcar repair shops has begun operations.
The 50-50 joint venture with Greenbrier Cos., named GBW Railcar Services, operates 38 railcar repair, refurbishment and maintenance shops in North America, according to a news release.
Officials said the joint venture will enable them to tap into what they said will be a robust tank car repair business. Federally mandated tank car recertification activity is expected to increase by 25 percent from current levels through 2015, and steadily accelerate, the companies have said.
Based in Pittsburg, Watco is the parent company of Kansas & Oklahoma Railroad, based in Wichita.
