WSU economic index for March shows little improvement expected

Wichita State University’s index of leading indicators for March shows little prospect for economic improvement in the coming six months.
The index was developed by WSU’s Center for Economic Development and Business Research to try to gauge economic activity over for the coming six months. The March index was about the same as the index for February and for March 2013.
Compared to March 2013, the value of building permits in Wichita was up almost 60 percent. The number of people working locally, the amount of air freight and the number of air passengers were all up slightly. But the size of the total local labor force, which includes those seeking work, and the amount of electricity consumed were down.
The center’s index of leading indicators for the entire first quarter was also about same as the first quarter of 2013.
