Collins Bus Corp. plans to manufacture a small school bus fueled by compressed natural gas.
The South Hutchinson-based company said Wednesday it has begun taking orders for the Type A bus.
It is partnering with Wesport Power Inc., which is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, and will provide the vehicle’s natural gas fuel system.
Collins said in a news release that the new bus is expected to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by up to 15 percent and reduce operating costs for its users.
Kent Tyler, president and CEO of Allied Specialty Vehicles’ bus division and interim president of Collins Bus, said in the release that the new bus targets “the fastest growing segment of the alternative fuel school bus market.”
Collins said it expects to begin deliveries of the new bus model this fall.
