Westar Energy announced profits of $69 million, $0.53 a share, in the first quarter, up from $51 million, or $0.40 a share, in the first quarter 2013.
The higher profit was largely driven by higher revenues, which were related to colder weather this past winter and higher prices from investments in air quality controls and transmission infrastructure.
Higher revenues were partly offset with higher operating costs associated with scheduled maintenance, employee benefit costs and depreciation expense.
