Five Kansas businesses and organizations — including three in Wichita — have been named as semi-finalists for the 2014 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award, the Defense Department’s Employer Support of Guard and Reserve said this week.

Textron Aviation’s Beechcraft, iSi Environmental Services and the Federal Aviation Administration are the three Wichita organizations and companies up for the national award, which is the Defense Department’s highest honor for employers that support their Guard and Reserve employees. The city of Shawnee and Prairie Band Casino & Resort in Mayetta are the other two.

A review board comprising military and civilian leaders will select 30 employers as Freedom Award finalists this month. Then, up to 15 award recipients will be announced in early summer and honored at a ceremony in September in Washington, D.C.
