After Hours Auto Repair of Wichita has been named this year’s Emerging Business of the Year by the Kansas Small Business Development Center.

The small business center is affiliated with state and federal agencies and is located on Wichita State University’s Hughes Metropolitan Complex.

After Hours owners Mark and Summer Guerrero will be recognized March 11 at a ceremony in Topeka, and numerous state officials are expected to be part of the event.

The Wichita company, chosen from a field of about 2,500 businesses, is at 2606 W. Pawnee, near Meridian, and has been in operation for more than six years. It now has six employees and six bays.

Summer Guerrero, an Iraq War veteran, said they have consulted the Kansas Small Business Development Center since before they opened. She took all of the classes and did all of the homework, she said.

Center staff urged them to think hard about their business plan and helped them adjust as their business grew. They still call to check in when they have big decisions to make, Summer Guerrero said.

“It’s available to anybody who has a dream,” she said. “It’s amazing.”

Alan Badgley, assistant director of the center, has worked with the Guerreros for years and said they’ve worked very hard on their business, made smart decisions and are reaping the reward.

“The reason we picked them this year is they are just a really good story,” he said.
