Kansas feedlots see another slide in numbers

Large Kansas feedlots contained 2.01 million cattle on feed as of Jan. 1, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

That was down 5 percent from last year and represented the smallest number on feed as of Jan. 1 since 1995.

Placements in December totaled 360,000, down 1 percent from 2012, while marketings totaled 385,000 head, down 9 percent.

Production of milk in Kansas during December was 251 million pounds, up 4.1 percent from last year.

The production per cow averaged 1,845 pounds, up 5 pounds from 2012.
