Kara Hunt

Vice president of human resources, Delta Dental of Kansas

Hunt studied to be a clinical psychologist in college, but worried about taking people’s problems home with her from work.

After taking a job in human resources instead, she said, “I kind of fell in love with and have been doing it ever since.”

Last month, Hunt was named HR professional of the year by the Kansas State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management.

Hunt, 39, grew up in Wichita and graduated from Wichita State University with a dual major in biology and psychology and a minor in chemistry. Although that might seem like “a little bit of a strange path” for someone in human resources, she said it’s helped her on the job.

“You've got the analytical from the science and the dealing with people from the psychology,” she said.

She had worked for Commerce Bank, Sheplers, The Wichita Eagle and the Arnold Group before moving to Delta Dental in July.

“For the most part, the laws and policies and processes are fairly consistent” across industries, she said. “The cultures are very different and the products are very different.”

Hunt and her husband, Aaron, have two daughters – Sophia, 9, and Isabella, 5. She enjoys reading, traveling, running, spending time with family and volunteering for numerous organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Wichita Symphony Society and Laughing Feet, which pairs special needs students with their mainstream counterparts in musical and theatrical performances.

“A lot of the things I do are kind of education-related,” she said.
