Mark Staats will be the new president and CEO of the Derby Chamber of Commerce, starting Monday.
The Derby City Council member, business owner and retired police officer will replace Alicia Early, who is relocating to Colorado.
Staats, who spent 17 years on the Derby police force, said when he learned in August that Early would be leaving, he thought about it and decided the timing was right to go after the job.
He’s been a Chamber member since 2004, and served on its board of directors for 6 1/2 years.
Staats started Mark It ADvantage, a promotional products business, shortly after medically retiring from the Derby police, where he was a sergeant.
He said he plans to wind down his business but fulfill all outstanding orders for customers. “I was at a point that I was ready to move on,” he said of exiting his home-based business.
Staats, who has served on the City Council for six years, said he has been a strong advocate of the chamber because he feels a “corporate” responsibility to the community where he lives, and because it’s been a good networking tool for his business.
He was born in Omaha and moved to Derby in 1979. He is a 1983 graduate of Derby High School and has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Friends University.
