The Citizens State Bank will expand its presence in Newton by opening a third branch.
Officials of the $275 million, Moundridge-based bank said Thursday that they hope to open by mid-Ocotber the new branch at 1225 N. Main, which was previously a Bank of America branch.
“We saw an opportunity to expand our geographic footprint,” said Bill Hake, Citizens’ Newton market president. “This gives us a location at a very high-traffic location. We think it’s good exposure and a good location to garner new customers.”
Bank of America closed the Newton branch in June.
Hake said the bank has two other branches in Newton, at 2315 S. Kansas and inside a Wal-Mart at 1701 S. Kansas.
He said Citizens will do a “freshening” of the new branch, including new paint, carpet and signs. “(The building) is in great shape,” Hake said.
One of the new branch’s employees will be Liz Koehn, who worked at the branch when it was owned and operated by Bank of America. Hake said he knew Koehn as a Bank of America customer before he joined Citizens as a banker nine years ago.
“It was a really, really good situation for us to be able to have her come work for us,” he said, adding that when he was a customer, Koehn made him feel that he was banking at a “hometown” bank. “We think she’ll be a real asset.”
Koehn will be the branch’s retail banking specialist.
Besides Newton and Moundrige, Citizens operates branches and offices in Canton, Goessel, Hillsboro, Hesston and McPherson.
