Robb Hunter

Criminal defense trial attorney, Monnat & Spurrier

Hunter figures his last job as a public defender in southern Georgia prepared him well for working at one of the city’s best-known criminal defense firms.

“It was a small area with a ton of crime,” he said. “Typically I had around 200 felony level clients on my caseload. That could range anywhere from felony shoplifting to murder.”

Hunter, 35, grew up in the Minneapolis, Minn., area. He earned a degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota, then a law degree from the William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul.

“I think what I like about criminal law is finding those cases that have an issue that you can work a little bit,” he said. “Every case, no matter how bad it looks, you can work a little and help your client. I like the fact that it changes and you get something different every day.”

Hunter moved to Georgia while his wife, Lisa Zak-Hunter, got her doctorate degree in marriage and family therapy from the University of Georgia. Then the couple moved to Wichita after Zak-Hunter took a job at Via Christi Health. The couple have a daughter, Ariel, who is 15 months old.

Hunter, who enjoys running marathons, discovered something about training here on a recent 16-mile run. After an easy time on the first leg of the run, he said, “I turned around and it was the most intense wind I’ve felt.”
