Alco Stores Inc. announced Thursday that its sales for the first quarter of the year increased 0.9 percent, excluding fuel.

However, the company, which is based in Abilene, said that on a same-store basis, first quarter sales, excluding fuel, dropped 2.2 percent.

In a news release, Alco said almost all of the drop could be attributed to unusually cold weather, with 80 percent of the decrease in sales attributed to losses in such categories as outdoor living, sporting goods and horticulture.

Alco owns and operates a chain of 217 discount stores in 23 states.

Although Alco has its origins and headquarters in Kansas, company officials announced earlier this year that they plan to move the headquarters to Dallas, Texas, in June.
