Agribusiness giant Bunge North America on Wednesday suspended operations at its Emporia soybean plant.

Spokeswoman Heather Rueschhoff cited a limited supply of soybeans produced in Kansas caused – the result of drought that reduced yields and strong demand from Asia.

Twenty-one workers have been laid off and 45 more are working reduced hours doing maintenance projects, she said.

The plant will reopen for the fall soybean harvest, she said

The company doesn’t expect to shut down any of its other operations.

Cargill Oilseeds spokesman Mark Klein said no change is anticipated for Cargill’s Wichita operation because of the soybean market.
