Alco, based in Abilene, reported Thursday that its December sales increased 4.4 percent over the same period in 2011.
The five-week reporting period, which ended Dec. 30, generated sales of $67.9 million for the discount store chain. That compares to $65 million last year, according to a news release from the company.
On a year-to-date basis, sales from continuing operations, excluding
fuel, increased 2.2 percent to $450.9 million for the fiscal 48-week period.

Alco operates 217 stores in 23 states, mostly in smaller communities.
