Hutton Construction said Monday it has been selected as the construction manager at-risk on a $42 million middle school project at Fort Riley.

The Wichita-based general contractor will oversee the work on the 174,000-square-foot building alongside project architect Schaefer Johnson Cox Frey, also of Wichita.

“This is a pretty big project, in and of itself,” said Hutton spokesman Brett Weller.

Groundbreaking on the school is expected in January. Completion is expected sometime in 2014.

Weller said the company was selected by the Geary County school district to build the school, which will be on the grounds of the Army post. The new school building will replace an older one and have the capacity to house up to 800 students.

He said Hutton has done a number of remodels and additions for the Geary school district, including at three elementary schools as well as athletic facilities and other buildings. “We have a really good relationship with (the district),” he said.

The new school building will be funded by a $35 million grant from the Department of Defense Installations and Environment Fund.

The Kansas Congressional delegation announced the awarding of the grant last week in a news release. Rep. Lynn Jenkins said in the release that the existing school at Fort Riley was 40 percent over capacity. “It is clear the school at (Fort) Riley was in desperate need of an upgrade,” Jenkins said.

Geary schools will match the grant with $6.7 million.
