Horsfall joined some old friends when he started work at Universal Lubricants, and among them was CEO John Wesley, with whom he’d once worked at Valvoline.
“There’s some Valvoline blood in here, which is good,” Horsfall said. “On the other hand, (Universal) is a very unique company.”
Universal is one of the few American companies that collects, re-refines, blends and distributes its own motor oil, called Eco Ultra.
Horsfall grew up in Iowa and graduated from Colorado State University. After a dozen years in sales and marketing with Valvoline, he worked for several technology companies, including the Internet search engineer Lycos and Turbine Inc., which created online games. He also started Gemini Voice Solutions, which provided voice communication over the Internet, and later StartUp Colorado, which supports technology companies.
“I would call (Universal) a high-tech company,” Horsfall said. “For that reason, my background is helpful.”
When not working, Horsfall likes spending time with his children – four boys and one girl.
“We spend a lot of time outdoors,” he said. “That’s probably why I love Colorado so much.”
