Optometrist, Lentz Eye Care
Komadina, a native of Bosnia, knew early on that she wanted to do something in the medical field.
But she wasn’t sure what until she followed an older brother to school at Newman University and heard an optometrist speak to one of her classes.
“He was just so excited about his profession,” Komadina, 27, said. “I thought, I really want to be this excited about a job and love what I do 50 years in the future.”
Two other factors were that her grandmother was developing eye problems and the workload of optometrists seemed to promise a more regular lifestyle than that of, say, an emergency room physician.
“I felt like I could make a difference in patients’ lives, but also maybe have a separate family life,” she said.
After graduating from Newman with a biology degree, Komadina studied at the University of Houston College of Optometry, where she developed specialties in contact lens fitting and the treatment of low vision.
She will work three days a week in Lentz’s east-side office, and visit its other three offices during the rest of her time.
Outside work, Komadina enjoys baking, reading and spending time with her younger brother, who followed her to Wichita and is about to graduate from Wichita State University.
She says she might retire in Bosnia and hopes to train optometrists there.
Komadina said she also liked living in Houston “but for some reason it never was as much home as Wichita is.”
