Mattress Hub is continuing its rapid expansion, this time at home.
The Wichita-based company, which Ryan Baty and Mark Barrientos founded in 2008, is going to break ground on its fifth Wichita site this week.
It will be near the southwest corner of 21st and Maize Road, just west of where the new Chick-fil-A is locating.
“We think it’s one of the best real estate positions in the city, and we’re excited to be there,” Baty says.
“Being able to do this at home, being able to go out and still grow in our hometown, that’s what makes this really exciting for us.”
He and Barrientos each live on the west side.
The new store, which will sell Tempur-pedic, Serta and Simmons mattresses, will have a 6,000-square-foot showroom. It will be similar to the Mattress Hub near Kellogg and Dugan.
“That’s probably it for Wichita,” Baty says.
That’s hardly it for the chain’s expansion elsewhere, though.
There are 21 Mattress Hub stores in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Baty says he and Barrientos are working on five more in the Kansas City area.
Baty says it’s their Wichita relationships that have enabled their expansion.
“We’ve got some great relationships,” he says.
For instance, he credits David Harris and Relianz Bank for a “practically seamless” deal for the latest space.
“Those guys, they’re fabulous,” Baty says.
Baty says Dave Neal of Dave Neal & Associates is a partner in the real estate near 21st and Maize, though not the business.
Mattress Hub is one of several mattress chains that have been opening stores in the Wichita market.
Others include Sleep Number, Beds for Less, U.S. Mattress and Bedtime Mattress Outlet, which all have opened stores since early 2011.
So is there room for them all?
“Wichita’s a very competitive market when it comes to selling mattresses,” Baty says.
“Everybody sleeps on a mattress when they go home,” he says. “The funny thing about mattresses is 80 percent of Americans hate the beds they sleep on.”
Baty says he and Barrientos want to offer a solution.
“We really try to take a different approach.”
Signs of closure
It appears Sign Pro may be out of business.
There’s an eviction notice on Sign Pro’s door at the Domestic Laundry building at 1425 E. Douglas.
“They’re a few months behind on rent, and so we’re going to be filing a petition for eviction,” says Sam Ritchie, who is an attorney for landlord Redstone Design Development.
Sign Pro’s phone is disconnected, the website is down and owner Shelly Hyson couldn’t be reached for comment.
Last year, Have You Heard? reported that Sign Pro had to move after GLMV Architecture purchased its new home at 1525 E. Douglas.
Sign Pro’s contents are still visible inside its 3,800 square feet on the first floor of the Domestic Laundry building.
The note on the door says Sign Pro had until midnight Monday to vacate the premises.
Ritchie says Hyson isn’t trying to make arrangements to keep the lease.
“Actually, we haven’t been able to contact her. We don’t know where she is.”
