Nugent, who joined Hillside this month, hopes to be the kind of doctor families turn to for decades.
“I like getting to know people and their families and taking care of them for a long time, the interaction you get to have," he said. Nugent said he also likes helping people manage long-term chronic illnesses.
Nugent grew up in Cheney. Although he knew he wanted to attend medical school eventually, he majored in math as an undergraduate at Wichita State University.
“I wanted to learn and understand the theory, not just be able to use it," he said.
He obtained his medical degree from the University of Kansas, spending his last two years on the Wichita campus. Nugent did his residency at Wesley Family Medicine.
“It was broad training in a lot of specialties," he said. “We learned what we needed for an outpatient setting. We (at Hillside) do mostly outpatient, so it was a good setting. We had a lot of good people teach us."
Outside work, Nugent enjoys hunting. He and his wife, Patricia, have a 4-month-old son, Grant.
Counting that and his new job, he said, "There’s a lot going on right now."
