Barbara Kice has opened the first Midwestern branch of Cantella & Co., a Boston-based broker-dealer.

"I just think that we felt that they were growing enough that it was time to get some more dots on the map," said Kice, who has an office in the RH Garvey Building downtown.

Kice, 59, grew up on a farm near Wilson, graduated from school in Holyrood, then got her bachelor's of science degree from Kansas State University. She later obtained master's degrees in gerontology and business from Wichita State University, where she was also employed as an assistant in the executive MBA program.

Kice worked as a financial adviser with Raymond James Financial Services from 2003 to 2010 and with Waddell & Reed from 2001 to 2003. Cantella & Co. is a Raymond James correspondent firm.

Kice was a financial advisor during the 2007 initial public offering of MOV, a Kansas-based oil trust. She called the energy industry "very relevant to our community. It continues to be a focal point of my practice."

For Cantella, she will focus on helping individuals and their families with retirement, estate planning and other financial issues.

Asked what she likes about her job, Kice said, "Everything. I enjoy meeting with people and finding solutions to their financial issues, and helping with their businesses."

Outside work, Kice is a big supporter of the arts.

"I really enjoy seeing artists develop, especially ones who are in their 70s and 80s and still doing a great job," she said.
