Spirit AeroSystems held a celebration today to mark completion of the first of the largely composite nose and fuselage of the Sikorsky CH-53K helicopter for the U.S. Marine Corps.
Representatives of the military and Sikorsky were on hand for the event.
It marks a significant new piece of business for Spirit because it is its first helicopter and its first all-new military product.
Spirit has a contract for seven CH-53Ks, but that number will probably go as high as 200 for the Marines. Additional demand is likely from other service branches and other countries.
Never miss a local story.
The helicopter is designed to transport personnel and material and can travel into combat situations.
