The final plan for revitalizing Wichita's downtown will be rolled out Sept. 21, downtown development officials announced today.
Boston-based Goody Clancy, the city's planning consultant, will walk through the final details in the downtown revitalization plan in a two-hour session beginning at 6 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Temple, 332 E. First.
A reception will precede the meeting at 5:30.
Jeff Fluhr, president of the Wichita Downtown Development Corp., said the meeting will include details in the final proposal but will focus on the implementation plan.
The Goody Clancy plan establishes 12 niche districts within downtown, including Old Town, Intrust Bank Arena, the Douglas Street corridor and the governmental district.
It lays out development ideas in the districts, ranging from housing to first-floor retail storefronts designed to catch the eye of walkers downtown.
The plan also establishes a series of development and design criteria and would only route public money to projects that would directly benefit the public, such as infrastructure.
The idea, Fluhr said, is to establish a downtown resource center where potential developers can come to gauge opportunities, including available leasing space, available property and land ownership records.
Work already has begun on compiling the database needed to begin recruiting business and housing from the resource center, he said.
Fluhr said the September meeting won't mark the end of the city's relationship with Goody Clancy.
"We were at the chamber the other day with them, and Dave (Dixon, the Goody Clancy lead planner for the Wichita project) said that this is the point where you guys decide what you do with the plan," Fluhr said.
"I told him, 'Nope. This isn't where we sign the divorce papers.' We hope that all of them will be very active as resources as we go forward."
