Leaders at the union in the Agco plant in Hesston canceled a Thursday vote on changing the contract to cut their workers' pay.
Kevin Rimbey, president of United Steelwokers Local 11228, said this afternoon that union leaders heard widespread anger from their members over the company's proposal and what union members say were the company's heavy-handed tactics.
The company first approached the union two weeks ago with the contract and the possibility that it might build a paint booth and add jobs at the plant if workers approved the contract.
Otherwise, union officials said, it would go to Brazil.
The existing contract will expire next year. The company wanted the union membership to adopt changes that would be effective immediately.
Agco would not comment.
