The Coleman Co. will lay off an unspecified number of people in its Wichita distribution operation, as it moves to a large new warehouse in the Kansas City area.
The new 1.1 million-square-foot warehouse in Gardner will start hiring soon and start accepting inventory in November, said company spokeswoman Joan Carter.
The new warehouse is close to a planned intermodal rail hub. The warehouse will handle products Coleman manufactures outside the country.
The company expects to hire about 200 people to work at the facility.
Products made in Wichita will continue to be distributed from Wichita.
Although Carter wouldn't specify the number of jobs eliminated in Wichita, she said jobs in Kansas will remain flat after the work moves to Gardner.
The layoffs in Wichita will take place in late December and in February, Carter said. Company officials met with workers about 10 days ago.
"It's always very difficult," she said. "We talked to employees and we wanted them to know the status of their positions so they would have more time to make a transition."
Wichita warehouse workers can apply for jobs at the new warehouse, Carter said.
