WICHITA - Starting Thursday, the Sedgwick County Health Department's H1N1 vaccination clinic will begin serving people up to age 24 — a big step for families who have been waiting to vaccinate their children.
The clinic at the Wichita Mall had been open only for pregnant women, health and emergency medical professionals, children 6 months to 4 years and children 5 to 18 years with underlying health conditions that put them at greater risk for the flu.
The clinic now will serve:
* Health-care and emergency medical services personnel.
* Pregnant women.
* People 6 months to 24 years old.
* People who have contact with and caregivers of infants younger than 6 months.
* People 25 to 64 who have chronic medical conditions or compromised immune systems.
Clinic hours are 2 to 7 today, still still serving the original groups. The clinic is closed Wednesday. It will reopen and serve the new groups: 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The health department also is opening mobile clinics that will serve the same groups.
A one-day clinic at the Mulvane First Baptist Church, 1020 N. Second, will open Thursday. Hours will be 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
School-based clinics will be open at Benton, Kensler, McCollom and Peterson elementary schools beginning this week. The health department plans to expand clinics at schools as more vaccine becomes available.
Hours at all clinics will remain in effect until the vaccine supply runs out.
