Police are trying to figure out who stabbed a man at a South Broadway bar early Monday morning.

A 37-year-old man showed up in the emergency room of the Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph campus on Harry at about 2 a.m. with “a pretty significant” stab wound in his back, Capt. Doug Nolte said. The man said he was at the El Farol Rojo bar in the 1000 block of South Broadway when an argument broke out between two other people.

When he stepped in to try to defuse the situation, he said, someone stabbed him in the back with a sharp object. He never saw his attacker, he said, and he does not know what kind of weapon was used.

When officers went to investigate, Nolte said, “we did not find a scene of any sort.” The victim’s wound is serious but not life-threatening, he said.

Nolte said investigators would like anyone who has knowledge of the altercation to call 911. People can also call Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111. Tips can also be submitted online at or from a mobile phone by texting TIP217 then your message to CRIMES (274637).
