Two young boys were placed in protective custody after officers found them hurt at their southeast Wichita apartment Sunday morning, police said.

A neighbor called 911 to report hearing a disturbance just after 4 a.m. Sunday in an apartment in the 4900 block of East Harry, according to a police document. Officers arriving in the area just east of Oliver found a woman standing in the front yard of the building, Capt. Doug Nolte said.

Further investigation revealed the 30-year-old woman had gotten into a fight with her 50-year-old mother, Nolte said. At some point in the fight, the younger woman’s 7-year-old son was choked and scratched on the face and her 9-year-old son was punched with a closed fist below his right eye.

“We aren’t necessarily sure what instigated the fight,” Nolte said.

The two boys were taken to Wesley Medical Center for treatment of their injuries and then placed in protective custody. Their mother was booked into jail on suspicion of aggravated child endangerment and brawling with her mother. The grandmother was also arrested in connection with the fight with her daughter, Nolte said.
