Girl, 5, hospitalized with head injuries; stepmother arrested

A 24-year-old woman was arrested late Tuesday night, suspected of injuring her 5-year-old stepdaughter, police said.
The girl’s father brought the child to Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph shortly before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday with what a police document described as “facial injuries.” But an examination at the hospital revealed injuries too severe for the cause provided by the stepmother.
The child was transferred to St. Francis, Lt. Dan East said. A CT scan showed “head trauma,” the police document said.
The Exploited and Missing Child Unit was called into the case. The child’s stepmother was arrested on suspicion of aggravated child endangerment shortly before midnight Tuesday at an apartment complex in the 1900 block of South Rock Road, police records show.
