A tour of the historic Catholic churches of Ellis County is planned for July 12, beginning at 8 a.m.

The tours will be done caravan style and will start at the chapel at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School in Hays. The tour includes St. Fidelis Church in Victoria, which has been nicknamed, Cathedral of the Plains.

Other churches include St. Catherine Church in Catherine, Holy Cross Church in Pfeifer, St. Joseph’s Church in Hays, St. Ann in Walker and St. Francis of Assisi Church in Munjor.

The days ends with a 5 p.m. Mass at St. Fidelis.

The churches were built by early Volga German settlers who, besides building beautiful stone churches in the late 19th century, left their mark on Kansas by chiseling limestone from the prairie and using the 700- to 800-pound posts to build barbed-wire fences, marking off fields and homesteads.

Cost is $10 per person and includes lunch. Call 785-628-2624 before July 9 to register. For more information, go to www.germancapitalofkansas.com or www.elliscountyhistoricalmuseum.org.
