Two young children were placed into protective custody by police after officers checking on their welfare discovered their mother passed out Wednesday, authorities said.

The grandmother of the children asked police to check on their welfare shortly before noon on Wednesday, Lt. Dan East said. Officers found the 2-year-old boy and 1-year-old girl at their house near Pawnee and Hydraulic.

Their 32-year-old mother was unconscious, a police report said. She was intoxicated, police said. The case remains under investigation.
