A volunteer group that has successfully reunited missing pets with their families is sponsoring a fundraiser Sunday featuring dog washes, pet portraits and low-cost microchipping.
Wichita Area Lost and Found Pets, a Facebook page that Lesa Hiebert took over as administrator in 2011, helps match up lost pet notices with found pet notices. Hiebert scans classified ads in The Eagle, notices on the Craigslist website, photographs on www.petharbor.com and sites such as www.lostdogwichita.com to bring pets home.
The page has become a go-to place for people searching for lost pets. Hiebert said so far this year, her group has helped several hundred pets return home.
Sometimes that means the group helps “bail out” — as Hiebert puts it — pets from the Wichita Animal Shelter. When Wichita Animal Control picks up a stray pet, the owner must pay a fine to get the pet returned. The event Sunday aims to raise money to help families pay the fines.
To qualify for assistance from Wichita Area Lost and Found Pets, owners must agree to spay or neuter their pet if not already altered, get the pet up-to-date on shots and do community service.
“They have to sign a contract,” Hiebert said.
She said the group has helped get 30 to 40 pets out of the animal shelter so far this year.
The event will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at 9360 W. Central, which is near the intersection of Central and Tyler behind a Dairy Queen. It will feature $5 dog washes, $5 pet portraits, $5 hot dog lunches and $25 microchipping as well as branded merchandise from the group.
More information is available by calling Hiebert at 316-554-8455.
