A 3-year-old girl is in critical condition at a local hospital and two adults – including her mother – have been arrested on suspicion of child abuse, police said Tuesday.

Police were notified by staff at Wesley Medical Center at about 7:30 p.m. Monday about the child’s severe injuries, police Lt. Dan East said. A police document said she had bruises all over her body and swelling in her brain.

She was transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and placed in protective custody by police. The child’s 24-year-old mother was arrested on suspicion of child abuse, East said, along with the woman’s 23-year-old boyfriend. The boyfriend is not the child’s father, East said.

The child was brought to Wesley by ambulance from Falcon Pointe Apartments in the 4200 block of South Hydraulic. That’s just south of MacArthur Road and just west of I-135.

The homicide unit is investigating the case because of the age of the child and the severity of her injuries, East said.
