Michael Kleinbeck, 52, is dead following an officer-involved shooting Sunday night in Montgomery County in southeastern Kansas, KBI Special Agent in Charge Mark Malick said Monday.

Two officers with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, along with an officer from the Kansas Highway Patrol, responded to a report of an armed individual at 3145 County Road 6450, to the north of Independence, at 5:49 p.m., Malick said. He said Kleinbeck was thought to be living on the property in a camper or trailer at the time.

“We don’t believe that was actually his property, but he was living there,” Malick said.

Shots were fired, though Malick could not comment on how many or who shot first. Kleinbeck was pronounced dead at the scene, Malick said.

Malick said he did not know if the involved officer had been placed on administrative leave, though he said it is customary in this situation.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.

“I wouldn’t say the investigation is still in its infancy,” Malick said. “We can’t determine everything in one day of investigation. These things take time to piece together.”
