Kansas City police are looking for a man who threw a BB gun at a man Monday before shooting him with a real gun, in an apparent attempt to justify the shooting, police said.

The shooting occurred during an argument about 9:30 a.m. in the 3400 block of Flora Avenue. The 44-year-old victim suffered two gunshot wounds to his upper leg.

The victim told police he argued with the other man in the street over money. The other man tossed him the BB gun, which he caught. The man then fired at him, knocking him to the asphalt.

Witnesses saw the victim trying to scoot away from the shooter, who was pacing back and forth over him, yelling at him. Witnesses said the shooter fired several more times at the victim before driving away.

A friend drove the victim to a hospital. Police found the BB gun, blood and spent shell casings in the street.

Weapons dropped near people who have been shot to justify the shooting are called “throw-down” guns. Detectives said they can think of no other reason for the gunman to have tossed the BB gun at the victim.
