Two children were taken into protective custody and their mother questioned Friday after a passer-by spotted the children unattended on an apartment balcony after midnight, Wichita police said.

Sgt. John Hoofer said officers arrived at an apartment in the 9100 block of East Harry, near Webb Road, at about 12:50 a.m. Friday and found a 3-year-old girl and 1-year-old boy unattended. The children’s mother had left them alone while she went to a grocery store, he said.
