A man was detained and questioned by Wichita police in a city courtroom Wednesday afternoon after a possible threat was called into 911, Lt. Dan East said.
Initial reports were that the threat was intended for the Sedgwick County Courthouse, a dispatch supervisor said. A lockdown was ordered.
But actually the threat involved someone making an appearance in Municipal Court across the street at City Hall, East said.
East said he didn’t know any details about the threat or who called 911 to report it shortly before 3 p.m. The man was taken into custody about 15 minutes later.
“We don’t know yet even if the caller was being truthful” about the threat, East said.
Meanwhile, security measures were also taken at the county courthouse because it wasn’t clear from the caller which court rooms were being threatened, authorities said.
“People get the two buildings confused all the time,” said Lt. David Mattingly of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. “Any time we get that call, we’re going to take the threat seriously.”
Law enforcement officers were stationed on almost all of the floors at the county courthouse while the matter was being sorted out.
Observers said they were told to stay in the county’s courtrooms.
The person who called 911 told the dispatcher that “somebody was going to do something to somebody,” the dispatch supervisor said.
“The call was all second-hand information,” the supervisor added. “It wasn’t from the person who was supposedly making the threat.”
The threat was general and no specific details were given, the supervisor said.
