A woman walking out of a south Wichita hotel room caught a stranger in her Jeep, then pepper sprayed him when he got out and threatened her with a knife early Wednesday morning, police said.

The man fled but was caught a short time later by officers responding to the victim’s 911 call, Lt. Dan East said.

The 26-year-old woman was leaving a room at the Relax Inn, 2232 S. Broadway, at about 2 a.m. Wednesday with a 40-year-old man when they saw a stranger inside her 1996 Jeep, East said. When they confronted the intruder, he emerged and pulled out a knife.

The woman sprayed him with pepper spray and he ran off, East said. Officers found a man in his mid-20s matching the description of the suspect in the area a short time later.

Items taken from the Jeep were returned to the woman, East said. The suspect was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail.
