A fake grenade in a student’s backpack prompted an evacuation at Enders Open Magnet Elementary School in Wichita on Friday, district officials said.

District spokeswoman Susan Arensman said a student brought a fake grenade to school in his backpack. Another student found out and told a teacher, she said.

Officials contacted Wichita police and the school “had a fire drill while the situation was investigated,” Arensman said in an e-mail. Police quickly determined the grenade was fake, she said.

Students were back in the school at 3030 S. Osage, near 31st South and Seneca, within 10 minutes. Disciplinary action was taken with the student, Arensman said.
