Sedgwick County Jail sergeant on leave after alleged threats

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has put a detention sergeant on administrative leave after he allegedly made threats against co-workers in phone calls to the jail over the weekend, Sheriff Jeff Easter said Friday.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has put a detention sergeant on administrative leave after he allegedly made threats against co-workers in phone calls to the jail over the weekend, Sheriff Jeff Easter said Friday.

“He threatened violence” against several people, Easter said.

“We took it serious enough to investigate it as a crime.”

The detention sergeant is not under arrest; sheriff’s investigators planned to present their case to prosecutors Friday, Easter said. He said the sergeant most likely would not be formally charged – if he is charged – until he would appear before a judge, which is normal in such cases.

Easter wouldn’t give the sergeant’s name but said he is a nine-year veteran assigned to the second shift and had been promoted to sergeant about three years ago.

Easter termed it a possible case of criminal threat, which is a felony crime.

The sheriff said he wanted to emphasize that the sergeant was off-duty at the time of the alleged threats. It appears from the investigation that the sergeant could have been under the influence of alcohol, Easter said.

Easter wouldn’t be specific about the nature of the alleged threat but said it did not appear to be related to a work-related dispute, so it “struck us odd as how this occurred.” He said no particular employees were named in the threats.

After Easter spoke to reporters Friday morning, his office gave a brief statement, saying: “On Saturday, May 3rd at approximately 5:00 p.m. it is alleged that an off-duty Detention Supervisor called several on-duty Detention employees and made threatening statements. Detention supervision was notified and an investigation was conducted.”

The administrative leave is paid leave, Easter said.

Easter said the office has taken security measures.

Easter also said the phone calls were not recorded and that the sergeant didn’t attempt to disguise himself.
