A 6-year-old struck by a car in the 6200 block of East Eilerts on Saturday afternoon was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but is improving, Wichita police Sgt. Scott Brunow said.
The boy was apparently crossing the street in the residential neighborhood when a car rounded the corner on northbound Courtleigh Street that turns into Eilerts and hit him about 1:39 p.m., Brunow said. The address is west of Woodlawn and south of Kellogg.
The boy "flipped over the car," Brunow said. The vehicle didn't stop. Its driver instead continued eastbound on Eilerts and eventually turned south on Fabrique Street, Brunow said witnesses told police.
The boy's parents, he said, called 911. They apparently were outside when the car struck the boy.
Brunow did not know the nature of the 6-year-old's injury but said they were not life threatening. By mid-afternoon he had been upgraded to serious condition and was "stable," he said.
Police continued searching for the car and its driver Saturday afternoon. Brunow said witnesses described the car as a silver four-door Pontiac Grand Prix. A man was driving, he said.
