A single-engine plane made an emergency landing in a plowed field just north of K-96 shortly after take-off around noon Wednesday, police said.
The pilot, who was the only person on board, told police he took off from Riverside Airport in north Wichita at about 12:30 p.m. The plane almost immediately encountered engine trouble, so the pilot landed in the field on the east side of Hoover Road just north of K-96, Sgt. Bill Stevens said.
The pilot, who lives in Wichita, was not injured.
Wind gusts were regularly clocked at more than 45 miles an hour at about the time the pilot made the emergency landing, according to the National Weather Service, but Stevens said weather did not appear to be a factor in the incident.
Riverside Airport is about two miles south of where the plane landed. The plane was clearly visible to traffic passing by on K-96.
