A suspicious garage fire earlier this week in south Wichita has been confirmed as an arson, Wichita Fire Department officials said Wednesday.
The fire in the attached garage at 4533 S. Osage early Tuesday morning caused an estimated $25,000 in damage to the structure and contents, fire officials have said. That’s northeast of Seneca and 47th Street South.
Lt. Joe Evans said a suspect has been identified in the case, but he would not release additional information. Two boys, ages 17 and 12, who live at the house were involved in a one-vehicle accident in the 3600 block of South West Street not long after the fire was discovered.
The 17-year-old, who was driving, told police he intentionally crashed into the utility pole hoping “to kill both himself and his brother,” police Lt. Jeff Gilmore said.
The brothers were both taken to a local hospital for treatment, and the driver was booked into the juvenile detention center on suspicion of offenses that included possession of meth.
