Police: Shots fired during drug deal; woman beaten; man arrested

A man was arrested late Monday night after he reportedly fired numerous gunshots and then started beating a woman he was with in east Wichita, police said.

Officers responding to a 911 call at about 8:30 p.m. Monday found a 40-year-old man in the 6400 block of East Cottonwood, near Kellogg and Woodlawn, who said he fired three shots at a man they intended to sell drugs to, Lt. Steve Kenney said.

He then said he beat the 32-year-old woman he was with because he was upset over the death of a child, Kenney said. The woman suffered a fractured nose and cuts to her face.

The man was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of numerous offenses, including criminal discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Officers could not find the person who reportedly had met the couple at the Cottonwood location, Kenney said.

“We have no idea who he was firing at,” Kenney said.
