A preliminary plan calls for a two-mile stretch of I-235 to be closed the weekend of April 25-27 so construction can continue on two flyover bridges.

Scheduled work must be completed before that time or the closure will be pushed back to a later date, said Tom Hein, spokesman for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

The closure of the west Wichita bypass between Central and Zoo Boulevard is required so 12 steel bridge beams can be put in place over I-235 and 13th Street, Hein said.

That stretch will be closed starting at 7 p.m. on April 25, a Friday, and is expected to reopen the night of April 27, a Sunday.

Interstate traffic can take a detour to West Street using Central and Zoo. All northbound traffic will exit at Central, travel 1 1/2 miles to West, travel north and turn left on Zoo before returning to I-235 via the northbound ramp. Southbound traffic will use the same city streets.

The $35-million project, which began in 2012, is expected to relieve traffic congestion by constructing the flyover bridges – one northbound, one southbound – over the Big Ditch to connect I-235 to 13th. Work is scheduled to be completed by late November, Hein said.
